July 9, 2016 Version 5B

Draft ... in progress

This document itemizes the experiments, attendees and instruments used in the evaluation of the Rossi/Focardi eCat.

I have included links to NyTeknik (English version), because they have reported on every experiment and press release.

See lenr.qumbu.com for information about the eCat and analyses of the published experiments.

Other Tests
Nov 20, 2009 Demo to Tony Tether, former director of DARPA. "The input electrical energy to increased heat energy output was 25 (may be off a bit here but nothing that would change the conclusion) and the fact that this was true over many hours negated that some chemical reaction was the cause) ... if it was a hoax, it was a damn good one." New Energy Times
??? Jed Rothwell says he has talked to people who did a test of a system independent of Rossi, which indicated that it worked. "Yes, they installed all the instruments in their own location. Rossi had nothing to do with it . . . I don’t have much on this. Just a summary, some graphs and 6 photos of equipment. It looks like a standard HVAC boiler test to me. ... It looks like it worked, but I can’t be sure."
??? Jed also describes an attempted test of the "fatcat" by NASA where the output was blocked. This is probably the test described by Lewan.

Testo data loggers and probes Rossi/Customer "For the customer"
It is now known that Darden and Vaughn from Industrial Heat were at the acceptance test. (Possibly "The Customer").
Also note the hotcat under test.
Early 2012 "In early 2012, ROSSI and LEONARDO were contacted by Defendants DARDEN, VAUGHN and CHEROKEE, who expressed an interest in licensing the E-Cat IP in the United States of America"
Oct 26, 2012 "ROSSI and LEONARDO entered into a License Agreement with IH"
May 1, 2013 IH acceptance test (paid $10M)
Three systems tested : A (30-unit 1MW), B (1MW, not for acceptance), C (Hotcat)
Documents presumed to exist : Acceptance specification, ERV report.

Note: I suspect that all three systems were tested with the same pump/ecat/radiator system as used for the initial 1MW acceptance test. I'm guessing that the Hotcat was the "System 600" in Patent 20140326711 (See Fig 17).

1-year "Customer test" Pump array Pump spec

Documents presumed to exist : Specification, ERV report (interrim and final)
Rossi recorded data, videos of test area

Jed Rothwell says he has seen some data from IH, but is not allowed to say what.

Rossi lawsuit/lewan/blog comments -- 1MW, temperature was greater than 100.3 (check), average water 36 cubic meters per day. (Array of 24 metered pumps in parallel, each +- 2% repeatability, assuming gaussian gives +- 0.2% : most likely more accurate than any flowmeter).

Original Penon Report Data Correction (see e-catworld) Revised Penon Report
(Penon later clarified to Lewan that the bulk of the report, from July 16, was not by Penon.)
Note : the outer cylinder was metal, coated with a proprietary refractory paint. This version is like a pipe, with an open cylinder at the center.
Duration : 6 hours, COP 2.2
The "original" Penon report assumed that the inside of the cylinder was also radiating .. though the radiation would only be through the ends of the cylinder. This was corrected in the Revised Penon report.

Sep 6, 2012 A test by the Swedish Technical Research Institute SP failed to replicate the results of the "Penon" tests, because an RMS meter was not used on the previous tests. Swedish (Google Translate)
Oct 9, 2012 Pordenone report (because it was revealed at a conference there). Final updated calculation 328 hours (218 in SSM), COP 11 (after arbitrary 30% reduction, and ignoring conduction and convection).

Refers to the earlier Sep 6 earlier Swedish Test, saying the instrumention had been improved, using a  PCE-830 power meter, and controlling the input power with a Variac rather than a Triac. It also says there is an "upcoming 3rd party report" using the same type of Hotcat and instrumentation, which is expected to give similar results (Probably the Nov 2012 Levi test).

Levi Report (Also see Forbes)
Nov 2012: the device self-destructed.
Dec 2012 : 96 Hours, COP 5.6 Outer was ceramic, coated with commercial aeronautical black paint.
Mar 2013: 116 Hours, COP 2.6 (input power included the control electronics). Outer was steel, coated with Macota enamel (but not sprayed uniformly). Callibrated with a dummy run in the operational temperature range (300C).
Callibration dots of known emissivity were used.
May 2-3, 2013 Test of a Hotcat unit, as part of the IH acceptance test.
"Subsequently, a Hot Cat unit shall be tested for a period of 15 hours, as described below. .. Unit B and Hotcat are being tested solely for purposes of further research and development.
The Hot Cat unit will be tested 6 p.m. May 2nd - 9 a.m. May 3rd.
Oct 6, 2014 Lugano Report 32 Days, half at 1260C COP 3.2, half at 1400C COP 3.6 -- intentionally without SSM mode.
The outer cylinder was bare ceramic, raising doubts about emissivity.
Callibration dots and a dummy run were used ... but only up to 450C, outside of the operational range.

Guess : System 600 was the hotcat used for the "$10M" acceptance test.

2013? The one-year customer test was originally specified to be a "six cylinder ECat". Rossi clarified : "The six cylinders E-Cat is a prototype made by means of 6 Hot Cats." (Question,Answer)

Note 1 : From Mats Lewan : Email between Alan Fletcher and Mats Lewan

Note 2 : The multimeter DM 201 was originally provided by Rossi, but Lewan calibrated it against his own multimeter, and then kept it in his possession for all other experiments.

For the January report, Celani emphasizes:

/** All the measurements were made, INDEPENDENTLY, from a Researcher (and Technicians) of Bologna University. Rossi made only supervision about key safety aspects.
*/

The measurement of the internal temperatures T1,T2,T3 were used by Rossi to control the eCat (manually adjusting the resistor power). They were completely under Rossi's control, and are processed by Lab View software, which presumably has the ability to pre-process the displayed values. (And some of which were lost, in the Dec/Jan trials.) Some of these temperatures were cross-checked using other instruments. For example, in January the Bologna team made direct measurements through the top outlet of the eCat.

The Oct 6 setup was special, and Rossi specifically said that it would be done with his thermocouples, but they were examined and calibrated afterwards. The offset between the input and output thermocouples was established by running cold water through the heat exchanger secondary circuit before the Ecat was started.

Oct 28 was entirely by agreement between Rossi and "The Customer". Nobody else was even allowed to photograph any of the instruments.

Personal note : I do not see a large problem with experimenters using standard, stand-alone equipment provided by Rossi -- unless you believe that he tampered with them all. He did not object to any calibrations.

Version 2 : Lewan DID say that the electrical instruments in Oct 6 were his.

Version 4 : University of Bologna Clarifies Relationship With Rossi : "Bianchini is not an employee of our university but a student and should not have used the Department of Physics as his affiliation in writing the safety report." Rossi confirms that Bianchini is a specialist under contract to him. However, his measurements were used ONLY to show that the eCat's radiation was at safe levels. The university also clarified that Levi etc were acting in their private capacity, and not as representatives of the University : " These behaviors are not illicit and do not carry any formal or informal implication on the level of involvement of the University of Bologna on the matter."

Version 5 : International Heat acquired marketing and IP rights to the eCat in the Americas and China. Rossi announced the "Hotcat", which was tested by Levi et al. Rossi reported on a 1-year trial of a 1MW system in a "secret customer" factory, claiming a COP of over 50, and sued IH for $89M ($104M total). Rossi claims to be working on a tiny (30mm x 1mm) QuarkX, which can directly produce light, electricity as well as heat, with an overall COP of 200.
